The craft works on the principle of Gravitational force and has been in existence since before the time Sir Isaac Newton discovered and stated it. The dolls are handcrafted using traditional techniques and are painted in vibrant colours. The Raja-Rani Thanjavur Doll pairs are seen in various dance forms such as Bharatanatyam, Kathakali and Manipuri, etc.

Thanjavur Dolls is an Exclusive GI of Tamil Nadu and was awarded a GI certification in the year 2008.
