Soft stones or soapstones are kinds of limestones that are carved without joints with the help of a chisel, hammer, and other carving tools by skilled craftsmen to give different shapes to the stones. Various decorative artefacts such as sculptures of deities, animals, birds, etc. are intricately etched with the help of this unique technique.

The magnificent art involves chiselling a single sandstone or soft stone with the help of a hammer and other traditional tools. Beautiful structures with architectural excellence and intricate carvings are created by the highly proficient artisans of Varanasi and the surrounding regions after days of dedication. The process includes chiselling and hammering of the naturally obtained stone accompanied by the constant sprinkling of water to avoid overheating. Once the desired structure with carving is created, its surface is smoothened with the help of sand paper. The products are also exported overseas. Varanasi Soft Stone Jali Work is an Exclusive GI of Uttar Pradesh and was certified in the year 2017.
