Religious rituals are the source of Panchmura's straightforward yet vibrant terracota artwork. The art form is highly revered for its intricate detailing and durability. The craft is believed to have been practiced in the region for over 3000 years and has been passed down through generations of skilled artisans. The artisans use traditional techniques and tools like wooden molds, spatulas, and burnishing stones to create their masterpieces. Animal and human figurines, as well as useful items, ornaments for the home, and jewellery, are all available from Panchmura in terracotta. The design of the famous "Bankura Horse" is meant to represent a symbol of fidelity and bravery. At Panchmura, there are about 270 terracotta artisans.

Bankura Panchmura Terracotta Craft has gained national and international recognition for its artistic value and cultural significance. The craft has been recognized as a Geographical Indication (GI) product by the Indian government, ensuring its protection and promotion. This craft not only provides employment opportunities to local artisans but also helps to preserve and promote the rich cultural heritage of the region.
